10/4/2007 9:11:00 AM - Headlines made by the collapse of bridges in Canada and the U.S. are turning aging infrastructure into a hot topic. Based on recent Statistics Canada data, all four major components of engineering infrastructure in Canada — roads and highways, sewer systems, wastewater treatment facilities and bridges — are now well into middle age. After peaking in 2000, the average ages of the first two components have declined gradually. However, the age of the remaining components has continued to increase.
6/1/2007 6:18:00 AM - Highway and other transportation construction spending is not getting the usual late-business-expansion boost for two reasons: cuts to federal funding due to other demands on public money; and sharp materials price increases set off by international events. Highway construction spending has been volatile, but is up only 2.3% from the previous peak level in May 2006, well short of keeping up with rising costs. Furthermore, there is an apparent diminished priority for spending on highways in Washington.
