Construction Starts

Starts Decline Seasonally in September
10/18/2007 8:12:00 AM - Reed Construction Data announced today that the year-to-date value of U.S. construction starts through September 2007, excluding residential contracts, totaled $233.6 billion, 17.9% higher than in 2006 and down 8.6% from August. Because September is seasonally weaker than August, the month-to-month decline may not include any negative impact spilling over from the liquidity problems set off by the collapse of the subprime residential mortgage market.

The West Leads in both Non-residential Building and Engineering Starts
10/12/2007 12:16:00 PM - While U.S. housing starts remain weak, both nationally and across all major geographic regions, the news is much more encouraging on the non-residential front. The accompanying table, based on Reed Construction Data's tracking of construction project starts, shows that the West is leading the country both in terms of non-residential buildings (+25.4%) and engineering/civil work (+41.4%). However, in terms of actual dollars, the volume of non-residential starts in the South is greater than in the West.

Construction Starts Steady in August
9/19/2007 9:03:00 AM - Reed Construction Data (RCD) announced today that the year-to-date value of construction starts through August 2007, excluding residential contracts, totaled $208.243 billion, 18.6% higher than in 2006 and approximately the same as in July. August was the first starts report that included a full month of the negative spillover impact from the collapse of the residential subprime mortgage market.

Near Record High Non-Residential Construction Starts in July
8/29/2007 5:51:00 AM - Reed Construction Data announced today that the year-to-date value of construction starts through July 2007, excluding residential contracts, totaled $180.4 billion, 20.0% higher than during the same period in 2006. Declining year-to-date residential starts will fully offset the increase in non-residential starts.

Record High Non-Residential Construction Starts in June
7/16/2007 10:47:00 AM - Reed Construction Data (RCD) announced today that the year-to-date value of construction starts through June 2007, excluding residential contracts, totaled $152.2 billion, 19.7% higher than in first-half 2006. A decline in year-to-date residential starts is expected to offset most of the increase in non-residential starts. Non-residential starts in June, at $31.4 billion, were at a record-high level, 16% above the previous peak last November and 39% above year-ago June.

Record High May Construction Starts
6/21/2007 6:33:00 AM - Reed Construction Data announced today that the year-to-date value of construction starts through May 2007, excluding residential contracts, totaled $123.486 billion, 18.2% higher than in 2006. Starts increased 3.9% from April to a record high total. Preliminary estimates suggest that this non-residential gain will be more than offset by a decline in the value of residential starts.

U.S. Construction Starts by Region – April 2007
5/25/2007 6:55:00 AM - With the exception of engineering work in the Midwest, construction starts in the non-residential categories of construction have been quite strong in all four major geographic regions, January through April of this year versus the same period last year. According to the latest starts statistics from Reed Construction Data, the West is leading in terms of percentage gain in non-residential buildings, with the Midwest and South also recording strong advances.

April Construction Starts Highest in 18 Months
5/10/2007 5:43:00 AM - Reed Construction Data announced today that the year-to-date value of construction starts through April 2007, excluding residential contracts, totaled $97.355 billion, 21.7% higher than in 2006. Preliminary estimates suggest that this non-residential gain will be more than offset by a decline in the value of residential starts.

U.S. Construction Starts by Region – March 2007
4/16/2007 5:17:00 AM - Reed Construction Data’s latest regional starts show the Midwest leading in terms of percentage gain in non-residential buildings through the first quarter of this year versus the same period last year. The West and South are virtually tied for second place, with the Northeast trailing. In heavy engineering work (also known as “civil”), the West is the leader, followed by the South and Northeast, while the Midwest is in decline.

March Construction Starts Increase But With Signs of Slowing Growth
4/13/2007 12:31:00 PM - Reed Construction Data announced today that the year-to-date value of construction starts through March 2007, excluding residential contracts, totaled $71.233 billion, 21.8% higher than during the same period in 2006. Preliminary estimates suggest, however, that this non-residential gain will be more than offset by a decline in the value of residential starts.
