Among 54 major U.S. urban centres, Charlotte (6.0%) has the lowest office vacancy rate downtown and Honolulu (10.0%), the lowest in the suburbs, in the latest figures (third quarter, 2006) compiled by PPR. New Orleans (34.5%) has the highest vacancy rate downtown, while Boston (22.8%) has the highest vacancy rate in the suburbs. Three cities appear among the “ten lowest” in both their central business districts and the suburbs: Washington, Honolulu and San Diego. Two cities appear among the “ten highest” both downtown and in the suburbs: Dallas-Fort Worth and Atlanta. Two other cities are notable for their disparities. New Orleans has the highest vacancy rate downtown but is among the “ten lowest” in the suburbs. San Francisco is the opposite, appearing among the ten lowest downtown, but among the “ten highest” in the suburbs.
